This transportation guide has been carefully prepared by the International Office to assist international students arriving in Türkiye and traveling to Sakarya (Adapazarı). This guide offers step-by-step instructions for reaching Sakarya using public transportation, intercity buses, or trains. You’ll also find helpful details on how to get from local bus and train terminals to Sakarya University’s Esentepe Campus. ✈️ Transportation from Istanbul Airports to Sakarya (Adapazarı)
🛬 1. From Istanbul Airport (IST)
If you're arriving at Istanbul Airport (IST), there are several options to reach Sakarya (Adapazarı):
- Direct Intercity Buses: Several bus companies operate direct routes from Istanbul Airport to Adapazarı. These buses depart from the intercity bus platforms on the arrivals level, and the trip typically takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on traffic. Tickets can be booked online or at airport counters.
- Airport Shuttle + City Terminal Transfer: If direct buses are not available at your arrival time, you can take the official airport shuttle to the main intercity bus terminal in Istanbul (such as Esenler). From there, buses to Sakarya depart frequently throughout the day.
- Train Option via Pendik: Another alternative is to reach the Pendik High-Speed Train Station, which serves the Istanbul–Ankara YHT line. To do this, you would need to take a shuttle or taxi from the airport to Pendik, and then board a train to Arifiye Station in Sakarya. Travel time by train is approximately 1 hour 20 minutes.
2. From Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW)
If you land at Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW), Sakarya is even closer and there are multiple convenient ways to get there:
- HAVASAK Airport Shuttle: The most direct option is HAVASAK, a dedicated shuttle service between the airport and Sakarya. The buses depart from just across the arrivals exit of the terminal building. The journey takes around 2 to 2.5 hours and ends at the Adapazarı Intercity Bus Terminal.( https://www.havasak.com.tr)
- Direct Intercity Buses: Some intercity bus companies also run direct services from the same area outside the terminal. These follow a similar route and may have different schedules.
- Train via Pendik: You can take a taxi or local transportation from the airport to Pendik Train Station, then board a high-speed train to Arifiye Station in Sakarya. This is a fast and comfortable option, especially during peak traffic hours.
- Transfer to City Bus Terminal: If needed, you can also travel to a nearby intercity bus terminal in Istanbul and catch a bus to Adapazarı from there.
✈️ Transportation from Ankara Esenboğa Airport (ESB) to Sakarya (Adapazarı)
If you arrive in Turkey via Ankara Esenboğa Airport (ESB), it is also possible to reach Sakarya (Adapazarı) by combining intercity transportation options. While there are no direct buses from the airport to Sakarya, the journey can be completed smoothly with a short transfer into the city.
The first step is to travel from Esenboğa Airport to Ankara Intercity Bus Terminal (AŞTİ). This can be done using airport shuttle services or taxis. Shuttle buses depart frequently from the airport exit and reach AŞTİ in approximately 45 to 60 minutes, depending on traffic. Taxis are also available and offer a slightly faster option.
Once you arrive at AŞTİ (Ankara Bus Terminal), you can purchase a ticket for a bus to Adapazarı (Sakarya Intercity Bus Terminal). Intercity buses between Ankara and Sakarya are frequent, with departures throughout the day and evening. The trip typically takes around 4 to 5 hours, depending on the service and road conditions.
Alternatively, you can also consider using the High-Speed Train (YHT). From Esenboğa Airport, you can travel to Ankara Train Station by shuttle or taxi. From there, board a high-speed train to Arifiye Station in Sakarya. This route is comfortable and slightly faster than the bus, with travel times between 3 and 3.5 hours including transfers. Train tickets should be booked in advance, especially during busy travel seasons.
Both options—bus and train—are safe and widely used, with modern amenities such as air conditioning and reserved seating. As always, it is best to check schedules ahead of time and plan for possible traffic or delays during national holidays.
Transportation from Arifiye Train Station to Sakarya University (Esentepe Campus)
From Arifiye High-Speed Train Station, you can take the purple-colored "Ofis Garaj" minibus to the city center in about 15–20 minutes. Once at the city center, you can transfer to a bus heading to Sakarya University. You can choose between the blue private public buses, which accept cash payments, or the green municipal buses, which accept Kart54, as well as contactless credit or debit cards. Transportation from Sakarya Bus Terminal to Sakarya University (Esentepe Campus)
If you arrive at the Sakarya Intercity Bus Terminal (Sakarya Otogarı), you can reach Sakarya University (Esentepe Campus) directly by taking the 29 municipal bus line. This bus departs from the lower floor of the terminal, just across from the main exit. The route is popular among students and provides a direct connection between the terminal and the university campus.The ride takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic and time of day. You can pay for the bus fare using a Kart54 transportation card, which is available from vending machines at the terminal. Additionally, credit and debit cards are also accepted for contactless payment on the bus, offering added convenience for travelers.This is the most straightforward and affordable way to get to Sakarya University if you’re arriving by intercity bus.
